New Date: The 4th Digital Pharma Summit taking place in Brussels on June 29, 2020 will be quite exciting. As the Master of Ceremony, I will do all in my power to make it engaging, as we attack the key question of digital’s results. How and Why is #ICPIC2019 a #PatientIncluded conference?

We are honored to present to our readers this special focus on the first “patient-included” edition of ICPIC conference, under the leadership of founder Professor Didier Pittet.

Why is this newsworthy? Because it is so rare! When annual congresses for physicians first came into being, not only the attendees, but the speakers as well were physicians; even today, this is the case in the vast majority of these conferences. We don’t know where and when a professional medical congress first invited patients to attend and to speak. Fortunately, the idea that patients should be an integral part of a medical congress about …. helping patients (!), while not yet widely implemented, is at least no longer one that can be publicly shot down.

So, why did ICPIC choose to become patient-included? As Professor Pittet explained to us, “Patient participation and empowerment in infection prevention and control has been a matter of reflection and research for many years in different part of the world. Encouraging patients and relatives to remind physicians, nurses, and healthcare staff to clean their hands during patient care practices is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Hand Hygiene in HealthCare from the very first draft proposed in 2006, and initiatives and researches have been conducted on several occasions with, at times, good results. These efforts and results have been used within the framework of the “Patients to Patient Safety” initiative, part of the WHO global movement to improve patient safety launched by WHO in 2005. Nevertheless, to my knowledge, no meeting in our field has gone the next step and organized a “patient-included” conference, where patients are fully included in the organization, the production of content, sharing the titles, topics, lectures, meet-the-experts, and all other key moments of such an event. I am looking forward to these unique moments that ICPIC 2019 will offer to all of us.”

Taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, September 10-13, ICPIC 2019 is the fourth edition of the International Conference on Prevention and Infection Control. ICPIC brings together 1200 people from over 100 countries, to learn about advancements in infection control. This conference, which takes place every two years, was created a decade ago by Professor Didier Pittet. In addition to his professional responsibilities at the hospital, at WHO and in other public health organizations, and his work in creating the widely used alcohol-based handrub (!), Professor Pittet has been traveling the world for many years, putting into action multiple methods to encourage proper handwashing by healthcare professionals. How should patients be invited to medical conferences and under which conditions? Quite often, the relations between conferences and patients is left unclear, and patients can suffer as result. So in the spring of 2015, a group of people, primarily based in Europe, drafted the “Patients Included™ conference charter.” Five criteria were adopted for what would be a self-certification, enabling the conference organizer to assure that the event would meet basic patient needs. Doctors 2.0 & You, in its original annual event model, was known for being one of the first in Europe to invite patients as keynote speakers and attendees, and the first (2015) to fill these requirements.

The “patient-included” self-certification is based on satisfying five criteria. See also http://www.patientsincluded.org

Patients or caregivers with experience relevant to the conference’s central theme actively participate in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers.
Patients or caregivers with experience of the issues addressed by the event participate in its delivery, and appear in its physical audience.
Travel and accommodation expenses for patients or carers participating in the advertised program are paid in full, in advance. Scholarship are provided by the conference organizers to allow patients or carers affected by the relevant issues to attend as delegates.
The disability requirements of participants are accommodated. All applicable sessions, breakouts, ancillary meetings, and other program elements are open to patient delegates.
Access for virtual participants is facilitated, with free streaming video provided online wherever possible.

ICPIC responded to the self-certification requirements as follows:

Patient speakers and the patient advocacy group at Geneva University Hospitals participated in the design, planning, and revision of the program. They proposed and developed new sessions regarding the patient experience and perspective.
All sessions are open to patients. Disability requirements of participants are accommodated. The venue is fully equipped to accommodate patients with special needs.
Travel and accommodation expenses for participating patients Patients who speak at the conference have their registration, accommodation and travel arranged by ICPIC. Patient attendees pay no registration.
There will be Facebook live streaming of most of the patient-included track, organized by the Geneva University Hospitals.
A track of “patient-included” sessions, running from beginning to end of each day, is underscored in the scientific program. Some highlights are:

September 10: The pre-ICPIC workshop, addressing implementation strategies for infection prevention and control, includes discussions around patient participation in healthcare-associated infection prevention. The opening plenary session is devoted to “patient-included” facets of infection, prevention, and antimicrobial resistance control. Vanessa Carter will open with “her perception of healthcare-associated infections”
September 11: A patient participation platform will be held from 13h15 to 14h15 entirely designed and lead by patients. This platform is of course open to every registered delegate.
September 12: During “Empowering key stakeholders in infection prevention and control” Vanessa Carter will present “How to empower patients?”
September 13: At 9h00 on “World Sepsis Day: Worldwide initiatives” A talk will be presented by Francesca Stingele on “Severe infection: the patient perspective”

In addition,

Patients are moderating several sessions
ICPIC is preparing a video documentary with patients and professionals on the theme of “patient-includedness” and I will be doing these interviews.

And interestingly physicians who have experienced infections will also testify as patients.

Having led interviews with the infectious disease physician experts last year, to lay the groundwork for the patient-includedness actions, and then helped prepare the next steps, I am very excited to be attending in Geneva and participating in the multi-modal, on-site “patient-includedness” program. Meet #ICPIC2019 leading Infection Control Conference, new Doctors 2.0 Partner

Doctors 2.0 & You is proud to partner with ICPIC, the International Conference on Prevention and Infection Control, taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 10 to 13th, 2019, with the support of the Geneva University Hospitals, and under the leadership of Professors Didier Pittet, Geneva ; Andreas Voss, Nijmegen, Stephan Harbarth, Geneva. Previous editions have averaged 1200 participants from 100+ countries. Key topics include: antimicrobial resistance, catheter-related bloodstream infection, quality of patient care, advanced methods in hospital epidemiology research and early results of major clinical trials in the field, prevention strategies using various implementation tools, social media, telemedicine, and simulation models.

The opening keynote will be given by antibiotic resistance patient advocate and social media expert, Vanessa Carter , also a long-standing member of the Doctors 2.0 & You ambassador network. Patients are not only speakers, but have participated in the program design, the venue is fully accessible, and attending patient expenses are covered in advance by the organizers. Finally, the conference will be live-streamed.

Virtual Medicine 2019 @Cedars-Sinai : Denise Silber reports on the patient panel #VMed19

“ The Virtual Medicine conference of 2019 at Cedars Sinai sits at the intersection of VR technologies and cutting-edge clinical medicine. For the first time, a digital tool, VR, is therapeutic and clinicians and patients are interested! And great medicine starts by listening to the patient voice. Secondly, for such an emerging topic as therapeutic VR, it is outstanding that Cedars Sinai has so quickly developed an ecosystem based on the incredible local resources in the LA area, but also calling upon state, national and international experts and structures. I moderated the patient experience session and will long cherish those moments with Tom Norris, Jason Lieberman, Harmon Clarke Jr and Mark Holden, and, in flow with the audience.”

In bringing us up on stage, Dr Brennan Spiegel, founder of the Virtual Medicine conference, expressed the importance he attached to the patient testimonials; he noted that the conference is held in the hospital in order to remind us of the mission of everyone in healthcare, which is to care for the patient, and that we must recognize the valuable contribution from the patients who step forward to tell their stories, no holds barred.

DENISE SILBER INTRODUCING THE TOPIC.

The entire conference was riveting, whether listening to the content on stage, making new contacts at the networking moments, experiencing the demos or walking through the Cedars Sinai building complex. “Mind- blowing” we said about the latest research on virtual reality in a variety of indications. “Mindblowing” we said about the creativity of the speaker presentations and videos. And VR works not only on the now classical indications, such as chronic pain, phobias, anxiety, depression, but also in ways we are only beginning to explore. This year, we heard about disembodiment, using virtual reality to have an out of body experience, either looking at oneself from the distance via one’s own avatar, or communicating with oneself via a second avatar, such as one of Dr Freud, pronouncing your own thoughts. Mindblowing!

As the session moderator, I found that even mindblowing was not strong enough to express what we experienced, whether from the stage or in the audience. The audience was so attentive, you could have heard the proverbial (and or virtual;-)) pin drop, and of course we experienced the emotion and depth of feelings that only peer to peer communication with patients can elicit.

TOM NORRIS (L) JASON LIEBERMAN (R)

We listened to the four uniquely human stories of Tom, Jason, Harmon, and Mark. Each was called upon to explain 1) how he had been introduced to virtual reality and 2) how this technology had worked for him. In all four cases, a physician who either worked on their case or who had heard about their situation, had offered these patients the possibility of trying virtual reality, and the VR programs were typically effective very quickly. VR made unwanted symptoms subside and even helped them reach a superior level of well-being.

Tom Norris, a retired air force colonel with 23 years of public service, has extensive experience in trying to break the hold of extreme pain whether for himself or for other patients and patient groups he mentors. For Tom, VR was a logical next step, building on his experience with yoga breathing, an activity he had adopted from his literary hero, Nick Carter master spy. Tom first used VR with success on the pain and stress of four broken ribs.

Jason Lieberman, a patient advocate in cerebral palsy, who traveled to LA from his home in NYC for the conference, also coaches other members of the cerebral palsy community through the situations he has experienced. For Jason, VR meant the possibility of regaining his autonomy. Prior to VR, Jason could not move and was forced to “stare at the four walls” most of the day at a rehabilitation center. He used virtual reality to relax muscle rigidity and got to go home to his family.

Harmon Clarke Jr was suffering from chronic, intermittent pain related to IBD, until VR came along and broke the cycle. Harmon told us that his condition is in fact his super power, because it has enabled him to rise up and see the beauty of the world. Harmon credits the experience from illness to wellness with the possibility of realizing his dream of becoming a performer both for traditional audiences and for the patient community.

Mark Holden, had suffered multiple fractures of his tibia in an accident. He works in entertainment, and so the idea of using VR entertainment to separate himself from his pain is very appealing. His pain as well became bearable under the influence of virtual reality.

What are some of the patients’ recommendations? Here are a few heartfelt practical suggestions from our session. For every problem, they saw the way to go about solving it!

Timing: Improve on the entry and exit sequences of the VR programs. Don’t keep the nurses waiting at the beginning. Work on transitions. Don’t abruptly end the session for the patient.
Options: Provide lots of choice of scenarios, locations, sound,…for the patient to choose from
QC: Do good quality control to remove glitches, because they bring the pain back!
Gamification: Provide opportunities to move to the next level through your efforts, the way games do.
Consider the whole body: Try filming the patient’s body, while under Virtual Reality, to see how it is being impacted. Particularly important for cerebral palsy.
Work on VR solutions for brainfog.
Patient cooptation: Give patients the materials so they can show other patients how VR works.
